The office, President of the United States of America, is one, if not, the most powerful position in the modern world that any individual can occupy. However, there is another office in the same building and even the same family that garners much less attention: the office of First Lady. For the lack of attention both in historical records, and in public focus, First Ladies throughout the history of the United States have had much more influence and impact than they have been accredited. One such woman, Lucretia Garfield began, in her short term, to change the office of First Lady. Lucretia Garfield challenged the gender normatives of the Gilded Age, and she opened up her role for future First Ladies to exert their bold presence in the White House. Lucretia began her safari into the â€Å"world of men† at a young age, beginning with her education. From the moment she was born, on April 19, 1832 in Garretsville Ohio to parents Zebulon and Arabella Rudolph, Lucretia lived an aty pical lifestyle.
